This interesting specimen is an early SA Leaders' kepi with the correct early light blue/white piping around the top edge.  The kepi was originally manufactured prior to the use of the wool color band to denote SA group association.  Close inspection reveals that the light blue (Hellblau) Bayerische Ostmark band was added when the regulations changed in 1933.  The color bands were made available separately to allow SA members to upgrade their kepis without needing to purchase a new cap, which was welcomed since a large percentage of SA men were financially disadvantaged.  The color band has the normal seam at the reverse and grommets were applied.  For some unknown reason, there is a hand sewn seam at the side of the band as well. I am 100% certain this is a period modification, offering a glimpse into the history of the early SA as it developed.  Correct gold/tombak button and age darkened eagle.  Ersatz leather sweatband shows use but is in better condition than usually seen. Overall condition is outstanding for a period worn kepi!
