Description

Brass fitted M1880 Utility Knife was intended to be an all purpose tool on the frontier during the Indian Wars period, to be used for skinning game, digging shallow trenches, clearing brush, etc. There were about 11,000 produced, of which only a fraction survived. This example is marked 'Springfield Armory' and serial numbered '1596'. The rare original type 2 scabbard is maker marked 'Watervliet Arsenal'. The knife is in much better condition than usually found, showing use and age and with verdigris to the brass cross guard where it contacted the leather of the scabbard. Most of the surviving examples have heavily reshaped blades (due to constant nicking and refiling in the field) and broken or replace wood handles. Outstanding example of a scarce and historic knife.
