Non-regulation kepi with rose-pink color band is one of a small number of cheaply made examples that were first seen in the US in 1971 in a GI's souvenir group. All of the kepis of this type are exactly the same--with lightweight construction, streaking to the pink color band, incorrect zinc based eagle, incorrect chinstrap, and no lining. This example is in better condition than most. A long-time SA collector stated that he thought that these kepis were hurriedly made and distributed to the Austrian SA just after the 1938 Anschluß for wear in crowd scenes in newspaper photographs and newsreels. Most Austrian members did not own a uniform or kepi because the SA was held by the Austrian government to be an illegal organization. As no evidence has been found after researching press photographs or newsreels, the production of these kepis remains a mystery. The cap shows light use and does have a label gun plastic label with an inventory number affixed as can be seen in the images.
