WWI Binoculars were produced by the Crown Optical Company of Rochester, NY. The company was in business from 1906 through 1919. Due to a shortage of optics, the US military commandeered the company and manufactured optics for the services. This example is marked to the U.S. Navy, serial numbered, and company marked. The 6 X 30 binoculars retain their original leatherette covering, which shows some stains and a chip to the material. The brass parts were originally factory painted black, so most of the black finish is polished off. The leather case is marked to the U.S. Naval Factory Annex Optical Shop inside the lid, and the outer lid has an inset compass which is also maker marked. The leather shows handling, a few abrasions, wear to the straps, but appears complete.
