Hand signed order from Heinrich Himmler, Reichsführer SS, dated 12. August 1935 regarding the painting of steel helmets. The order was sent to the SS Oberabschnitts, all units of the SS Verfügungstruppe, all units of the Wachverbände, and SS Führerschulen Tölz and Braunschweig. All members of the SS Verfügungstruppe, SS Wachverbände, and SS Führerschulen were ordered to have painted on their helmets' right side a shield with SS runes and a swastika on the left with oil paint. There were to be sample drawings, which were added to the order when retyped for Heissmeyer to sign and have distributed. The order is mentioned in the Ludwig Baer book 'The History of the German Steel Helmet'. The painting of the insignia had to be completed for the 1935 Reichsparteitag. As it happened, the order was subsequently (2 days later) modified as helmet decals became available. The typed order is signed by Himmler in black ink. The paper shows normal age and handling. It has been archivaly matted along with a photograph of Himmler and a plaque, ready to be framed. A perfect accompaniment to an SS helmet collection!
