Fine quality SS officer's visor cap is made of a smooth napped doeskin field-grey wool with correct black velvet band. Thin style chin cords. Original eagle and skull show only minor wear to their silvered finish. Red wool piping for artillery. The black velvet band shows some minor fading as can be seen in the images. The visor shows crazing to its glossy black finish. The interior shows that the cap was stored in a location with some moisture or humidity, as the sweatband has numerous patches of old mold and spotting. Luckily, no other areas of the cap appear to have been affected. The leather band is the type that is machine sewn in the front of the cap and hand sewn around the sides and rear.  The cloth lining shows soiling from wear and the celluloid sweat shield is only partly present. With careful cleaning and conservation, the sweatband could and certainly should be cleaned and the mold neutralized and removed. This is a scarce SS cap with colored piping, which was only officially authorized for a short time, however because of its popularity, was worn by some officers and NCOs until the war's end.
