An example of one of the silver framed portraits that constituted one of the most personal and important gifts to persons that Adolf Hitler wished to honor. Almost every one of the top officials in the Third Reich received one and of course there originally was a signed photo of the Führer within the frame.  Many bore no signatures, or sometimes, just a signature.  Very few are personally dedicated to a person.  One reason for that is because many "unused" ones were taken as war booty by American servicemen as souvenirs.  Many were stored at most state buildings where Hitler worked or lived so they could be available for Hitler to give out on the spur of the moment.  Those that were actually given out, were likely destroyed by the recipient or the family before the end of the war in order to hide their ties to arriving allied troops.

This example is still cased, and was given out to Phillip Bouhler's wife in 1939.  Bouhler was a very senior NSDAP member.  He served as a Reichsleiter, was Chief of the Chancellery of the Fuhrer, and was also an SS General.  In that role, he was responsible for Aktion T4, which was the euthanasia program that killed more than 250,000 disabled adults and children in the early years.  This was a precursor to the holocaust, as many persons involved in this program went on to "fame" in the death camp system.

This photo likely survived in the case, because Helene (or Helli as the photo refers to her as), jumped from a high castle window while in detention after being arrested in Austria at the end of the war.  Her husband followed her shortly thereafter on May 19, 1945 by swallowing a cynaide capsule while held in US Internment. No wonder this photograph survived in the case!  It was likely stored away before the couple fled.
