This object is a Japanese tanto, a traditional short sword used by samurai. The handle features intricate wrapping that is beautifully intact in every way, including the Ray/shark skin covering beneath the wrapping. Menuki (the ornamental objects beneath the wrap are golden inlay, and match the rest of the fittings. All other ornamental fittings match, and are highly ornate.  Blade shows some age. The small knife (kozuka/kgatana) on the scabbard is in fine condition, and has Japanese writing on the blade and handle (see photos). This is one of 4 pieces that came from the same San Diego veteran's estate (the family wishes to remain private).
