Description

This photograph is a large 11x14 photograph of Lemuel Cornick Shepherd Jr.  He retired as a four-star general and the 20th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. A veteran of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, he was the first Marine Commandant to sit with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, marking a milestone in the Corps’ institutional stature.  This is a photo of Shepherd sitting on a hilltop as commander of the 6th Marine Division on Okinawa during WW2.

The photograph is personally hand-dedicated to his "dear friend and trusted G-3" who was Victor H Krulak.  During Okinawa, Krulak helped coordinate combat planning and execution during the campaign, translating higher-level strategy into actionable orders for regiments engaged in intense urban and terrain-heavy fighting. Although formally trained as an engineer, Krulak’s effectiveness in planning amphibious and ground operations made him a valuable contributor to division-level operations, particularly in integrating mobility, assault timing, and battlefield coordination under rapidly changing conditions.

This photograph was acquired from the estate of Krulak. We have many additional items available, but this was one of the key pieces from the group!  Original frame, shows age and wear.  A very famous photo (google it).
