This is a M43 submariner's cap used by the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. The Kriegsmarine was the navy of Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1945. The cap follows the standard M43 pattern for naval enlisted men. It features insignia including the Kriegsmarine eagle and cockade on the front and a "boat specific" cloverleaf with an Iron Cross on the side. The interior bears a maker label stamped 'Franz Ritter vorm. Carl Roth Dettingen' and the year 1942.
U-48 was one of the most successful submarines of WWII in terms of tonnage sunk. The clover symbol was a “good luck” emblem commonly associated with the boat. Outstanding opportunity for further research! Purchased originally from George Peterson.
