These academic fencing swords were used in Germany by college age men in an effort to prove their assuredness and manliness as they matured. These matches between students often resulted in "dueling scars" such as those sported by such Third Reich personalities as Ernst Röhm and others. This particular set comes from the family of Doctor Karl Gunter Kürn (pictured) who because he was only 16 during the war, did not serve on the front lines. He did however, after the war, attend university. The red, blue and white sword is from Innsbruck (Austria) and the right one is from Würzburg. Kürn's name can be seen engraved on the top of the pommel. The swords show wear, and have been in the Kürn attic for decades since they moved to the United States. Kürn attended multiple universities, and so acquired multiple swords during his student years. These are just two of the ones the family still has.
Studied in wurtsburg, Innsbrook, Munich.
