Description

Weighing in at 1.5 pounds of 835 silver, this extraordinary artifact from WWII Germany was acquired by us from a family 11 years ago (2013) and sold in one of our earlier auctions.  Each silver link features a district in the city, which is the largest city in Saxony.  It was a key economic center during the Third Reich, and was the scene of may of the darkest foundational hours of the holocaust, serving as a testbed for anti-Jewish policies that would later spread throughout the Reich and beyond.  Ironic, given the subtle presence of a huge swastika on the main medallion (look carefully).  I still have the contact information on the family that consigned it to us the first time, so I reached out and have heard back.  They sent me a copy of the attached newspaper article highlighting the mayor's chain (circa 1945).  I also googled the story mentioned in the article, and found some photos of the actual suicide scene at the office from which the veteran obtained this chain.  More info to follow, but this is a very concrete and exciting back-story!  As far as Mayor's chains go, this is one of the best.
